I had run into “amor fati” earlier this year, reading Alix Kates Shulman’s memoir, “To Love What Is– A Marriage Transformed,” (2008) which is a poignant account of her and her husband’s life together after his near-fatal accident at home. I do admire your spirit of venture and adventure in your many endeavors–painting, cooking, writing, travel, enjoyment of the arts. I hope this long and detailed commentary comes across in a positive way. 651-653 about “plans” “contributing to the community” “hav(ing) a goal in life” “I just want you to be able to get up in the morning with somewhere to go and something to do.” Filed away.”Ĭonversation exchange: (between Claudia and her mother Dahlia) pp. Paragraph: “As I filed away closed cases, in my mind, I methodically inserted memories … In Bangkok.

Turn of phrase: “achingly innocent in its stark blueness” “living scatters remnants of the heart in hundred different places one has to learn and live with a broken heart.” “My work garlands my isolated life” Gerri, let me end by saying that despite my grammarian’s and inexpert, nonprofessional literary critic’s reading of Amor Fati, I do commend you for producing it, and I can say that there were parts (turns of phrase, paragraphs, conversation exchanges, etc. I think this would be an exciting project, and I would definitely watch it whether as a telenovela or a big-screen movie! Five generations of strong females whose lives are inexorably linked in tangled webs of familial relations (legitimate/illegitimate, blood/affinal, etc.) would be perfect material for the screen–big or small, hot or cool. Then of course, later, I figured you were in Daisy (the painter) and Claudia (the cupcake baker), and perhaps in Dahlia (the interior designer), Lilly (the cosmopolite), etcįinally, let me say that by the last 1/5 to 1/4 of the book, I suddenly realized that the writing issues I raise would matter little to a translation of this novel into a screenplay for either a telenovela or a cinematic epic. I also decided that Lilly must be your alter-ego in the cast of characters. Lilly’s first narration delighted me because I “recognized” the situation.

I also liked the narrations after it, about the evacuation years spent in the foothills of the Ilocos-Cordillera mountains the narrations by Leonora and Franco of the after-war years. I had heard and read accounts of the Death March, and seen depictions of it on screen–both footage and cinematic–but this was the first time that a first-person narrative made it “real” to my senses. The first narration that I found myself gripped by was Enrico’s narrative of the Death March. For at least a couple of tangles, I had to write down the read-out of the entanglements (“Dahlia’s husband had a 20+ years affair with her sister-in-law, i.e., woman married to her brother.”–that turns out much later to be more accurately “The woman with whom Dahlia’s husband had a 20+ years affair later married Dahlia’s brother, making Dahlia’s husband’s longtime mistress later Dahlia’s sister-in-law.”) And that’s not yet saying anything about their entanglements via their grandmothers who are cousins! Oy vey! Talent too, it goes without saying, that I see you have worked to hone through Wellesley and Iowa writing courses and workshops.īefore I elaborate, I must tell you that I spent quite a bit of time sketching the linked family trees, producing several versions on bond paper (at least five!) as the narrators (with their slice of the grand scheme of Fate) came up in sequence. This book is quite a feat, Gerri it is a piece of work that required ambition, passion, courage, and stamina.

On finishing it last night, I let out a sigh of satisfaction at a marvelous tale of interwoven lives. I was able to buy Amor Fati from xlibris with Abby’s technical and logistic support, and read it on iBooks over 4 days. By: Professor ALCasambre- Rood, University of the Philippines
